Taxi drivers in and around Leamington are allowed to wear shorts while driving, councillors ruled this week.
Cabbies had complained that their legwear was unfairly restricted, with officials at Warwick District Council believing that wearing anything less than full-length trousers would breach guidelines stipulating drivers be “clean and respectable in dress”.
But the council’s regulatory committee clarified the policy when it met on Tuesday, concluding that it did not in fact ban the wearing of shorts, provided they were sufficiently smart.
Speaking after the meeting, committee member Coun Bob Crowther (Lab, Clarendon) said: “After a lot of debate about what were tailored shorts and what weren’t tailored shorts, we felt there had never been an explicit ban on shorts in any case.”
Philip-James Court, who runs Warwick firm Castle Cars, led the protests against the original decision, made last year. He said: “It’s been a complete waste of taxpayers’ money.”
