Only one in ten children in the UK walks or cycles to school, compared with seven in ten 20 years ago.
Now people across the county are being asked for their opinions regarding a new five-year plan which aims to encourage a 'greener' route to school.

A summary of Warwick-shire County Council's Sust-ainable School Travel Strategy is available to vie
w online, along with a questionnaire for people to comment on the document.

Coun Martin Heatley (Con, Nuneaton Whitestone), responsible for the environment, said: "Whether it's school 'walking buses', road safety projects or school transport, the strategy aims to bring all of these things under one umbrella.

"We are all aware of the problems of the school run. One in four cars on our roads in the mornings during term time is on the school run, causing congestion and pollution in our towns and villages.

"The strategy has clear objectives about how to take things forward and we now welcome people's views as part of the consultation."

Young people hoping for cheaper bus travel in the county now have longer to respond to a transport review.

Last month, in response to lobbying from Warwickshire Members of the Youth Parliament, the county council developed a questionnaire for young people.

This aimed to assess the need for a concessionary transport scheme and what the scheme should include.

Following an overwhelming response from youngsters around the county, the deadline for responses has been extended to July 18.
