Gardeners will be able to turn their prunings into mulch by taking advantage of a wood chipping service.
The county council-run scheme has been popular in the past and residents wanting to use it this autumn are being asked to book in advance. The cost is £15 per hour.

Senior forester at the county council Ken Simons said: "At times demand has been high. We are advising residents to book early to ensure a slot.

"Why not share the cost with a group of neighbours? All we ask is that the material is contained in one pile for ease of shredding.

"It is surprising how much material can be shredded in one hour but if this is not sufficient, a further hour can be booked for an extra £10. This is a special offer for a limited period only."

Twigs and branches of up to five inches in diameter can be chipped by the machine. These can then be spread on the ground as mulch to control weeds by depriving them of light.

* To book call 738827, between 9.30am and 12.15pm.
