Irresponsible owners have made Mid-Warwickshire Cats Protection busier now than at any point during the last five years.
Record numbers of pets - even rare pedigree animals like Maine Coon Rocky (pictured) - are being abandoned simply because they are no longer kittens, because they cost more than was expected or because errant owners refuse to address simple problems like fleas.

With 30 animals in temporary placements, and a further 40 on an ever-growing waiting list, the Courier met branch secretary Chris Osborne and Vanessa Hill, one of the voluntary organisation's rehomers currently looking after nine animals

And of course, we met some of the unwanted cats themselves.

In February, the charity offered a free neutering scheme which has helped stem the number of kittens born this year in the Leamington, Warwick and Kenilworth areas.

That service will run again next month.

Anyone interested in adopting Rocky or any of Cats Protection's other unwanted cats, or anyone wanting cat care advice, including details of the neutering scheme, should call 334849, email midwarwickcats@hotmail.com or visit http://midwarwick.cats.org.uk
