Artwork created by Southam schoolchildren will grace the walls of the National Gallery for the second time in two years.
Youngsters and teachers at Southam Primary School are “over the moon” that their 3D interpretation of Flemish painter Peter Paul Reubens An Autumn Landscape with a view of the Het Steen in the Early Morning has been chosen from scores of others to go on show in April.

Open to schools across the country, the Take One Picture project is run by the Trafalgar Square gallery to encourage creative teaching and learning.

Each year a different picture is picked from its collection as inspiration and this year’s choice inspired the children to create a modern, sculptural series of pieces with the help of artist Philip Cox.

Headteacher Jennifer Jackson said: " Exhibiting in such a prestigious place is something that normally only happens once in a school’s life so being chosen a second time is an outstanding achievement.

“We were absolutely over the moon because to do it once is an accolade, but to do it twice in two years is unheard of.

“All the children in the school have contributed in some way and the judges spoke to them to make sure it was their ideas and work.

“It will be a phenomenal feeling to see the work hanging in the gallery.”

Pupil Amy, nine, helped to create the cows. She said: “It is more modern that the original painting and it’s really good that the judges liked it.

“It’s great that everyone will see what we did.”

The children’s first artistic recognition came in 2006 with an interpretation of Marquise de Seignelay and Two of her Sons by the French artist Pierre Mignard.

The children’s work will be exhibited alongside the original from April to June.
