Chris Bull was the latest name to go up in lights as major competitions continue to feature in the centenary calendar at Leamington & County.
The 16-handicapper produced a strong second round to take the 36-hole McGrath Cup at the weekend.

Despite heavy rain during the preceding week the course was in remarkably good condition for the 93 competitors. The morning rounds had started with
at 7.30am with more rain but concluded with Ben Illingworth clear of the field following an excellent round of 73-6-67 - with 11 players within five shots of the lead.

The weather improved after lunch and the second round was played in ideal conditions. Several players found their better form, none more than Bull who produced the day's best score of 80-16-64 to add to his morning 75 for the winning total 139.

Phil Garner was just one shot adrift following his 71 and 69 net scores totalling 140 and Joe Owen claimed third place also with nett 140. Bull also claimed the Guys Cliffe Cup awarded to the best 18-hole nett score of the day, with Kevin Rogers taking the Dick Cunyngham Trophy for the best gross over 36 holes (74 and 71).

The Junior Club Championship was won by Jamie Goode with a one-under-par 71 from Joe Owen 74. The Division One nett winner was George Wale (75-7-68) from Ben Illingworth (76-6-70). Division Two nett prizes were won by Shaun Ellis (107-27-80) and G Allen 121-34-87.

The juniors were also in action during their open competition and the home club provided the winner with Liam Salmon's 98-29-69 triumphing by virtue of a better back nine than local favourite Jamie Goode (70-1-69).

D Lane from Kenilworth was third with 79-8-71. A total of 24 players took part, with14 visitors representing ten other Midlands clubs.

The ladies contested the Lyons Salver and Morris Trophy during the week. Pauline Hayes (34pts) took the Salver, with Pauline Laidler the runner-up (32pts). Morris Trophy success went to Ali McLean (37pts) from Gill Thorpe (34pts).

Breezy conditions and soft fairways favoured the lower handicap players in the junior Presidents Putter competition at Kenilworth.

So it was no surprise to see players in Division One dominating. Matt Bolshaw led the way with a gross 85, nett 66 to claim overall victory by one shot over Division Two winner Rees Herrod who continued his recent good form with a gross 94, nett 67.

Dom Hands was runner-up in Division One with a nett 68, while Harry Fitzpatrick’s nett 69 was good enough to secure third place. In Division Two, Will Linford was runner-up with a nett 71 finishing two shots clear of Dom Hobbs in third place with a nett 73.

Daniel Lane’s gross score of 78 was the best of the day with a three shot margin over Taylor McDonald. In the 37-54 handicap category Matt Spencer was the clear winner with a nett 68.

Meg Lewis, Sue Shortland, Judy Langford and Maureen McIsaac scored 76pts to win the President’s Day ladies’ team stableford at Kenilworth, from Liz Brown, Barbara Everett, Sue Rattenbury and Cath Hoare (73pts).
